SEMAPHORE cont'd

Step 6:
Make the ladder out of 1/2" Hardware Cloth. Measure out and trim one column of the cloth about twelve
inches long. Sand the edges of the column to approximate the look of a ladder (see Figure 13). Silver solder
the ladder to the mast supports (see Figure 14).

STEP 7:
After the supports are soldered in place, drill a 1/8" hole at the top of the mast 90 degrees perpendicular
to the supports (see Figure 15). Then, cut a one inch piece of 1/8" brass rod. Solder this rod (arm support) into the main mast (see Figure 16).

Step 8:
Paint the structure any color you want. I used flat black, but this probably is not the 'real' railroad color.
After the paint dries, press on the arms that you made in Steps 1 thru 3. I fabricated the top of the mast
with a piece of brass that I made with my lathe. You can probably get a similar piece from a jewerely
findings or craft store. I also added a cement base for outdoor use. See Figure 17 for the final project.

Well, that's it. This was a fun little project. All it cost me was $56,789.89 in tools and materials. It also gave me an excuse to build a station to go along with the semaphore. Why I do this I do not know.
